This article explains the difference between the optional timber floor package and the locally engineered site foundation.
A prefabricated cabin kit still requires a site-specific foundation.
The correct foundation depends on soil, frost depth, slope, drainage, environmental loads, local code, utilities and the cabin configuration.
The Most Important Distinction: Floor Package Versus Foundation
SolidCabin may offer a prefabricated timber floor or crawl package as an optional part of the cabin order.
That package is not, by itself, the site foundation.
The optional floor package may include:
- Structural timber floor framing
- Floor sheathing or structural boards
- Prepared insulation cavities
- Selected floor finishes where included
- Connection points coordinated with the cabin structure
The local foundation must support and anchor the building and transfer loads into the ground.
1. Concrete Slab-on-Grade
A slab can provide a durable, low-profile base on suitable sites.
Items to review include:
- Excavation and sub-base
- Frost protection
- Drainage
- Under-slab insulation
- Utility penetrations
- Anchor layout
- Finished floor relationship
A slab may make the optional timber floor package unnecessary, depending on the approved cabin and floor design.
2. Perimeter Crawl Space
A perimeter crawl space can provide service access and support an elevated timber floor.
It requires decisions about:
- Foundation walls and footings
- Moisture and drainage
- Vented or conditioned crawl-space strategy
- Insulation location
- Access opening
- Anchoring and lateral resistance
3. Individual Footings and Piers
Footings and piers may reduce continuous excavation and can suit some sloped sites.
The engineer must evaluate:

- Connections between piers and cabin
4. Helical Piles
Helical piles may offer rapid installation and reduced concrete use on suitable sites.

5. Basement

6. Other Locally Engineered Systems
Some projects may use steel beams, grade beams, masonry supports or other systems.
The foundation should not be selected only because it was used on another cabin. It must be suitable for the actual property and loads.
